first long bike ride of spring…

Posted in Because I'm Fat, Bicycles, Friends & Familia by yoshi on March 24, 2010

i meant to post this a few weeks back, but it got really busy.

the bf and i met up with a few friends, including kyle and hernie and some people from nyc bridgerunners crew. what i thought was going to be a leisurely ride through brooklyn, turned into a massive overhaul over bridges, through 2 different bouroughs and one small island… WTF. lol. my thighs were NOT ready for that kind of ride, ESPECIALLY since this was my first long ride since my accident last year…

it was beautiful, but the pace was faster than anticipated so i couldn’t take many good photos – eventually i handed the camera over to the bf when we reached the tri-boro bridge (i’m pretty sure that was what that bridge was lol).

but before i get ahead of myself! there’s a new hipster cafe around the corner from my place – WHOA. actually pretty cute and good! they have muffins and lattes and stuff, so i can get my soy chai latte earlier in the morning instead of waiting til i get into the city!

ok, after our lil breakfast (and more images below), we headed over to the williamsburg bridge to meet up with everyone…

1. oops blinked, 2. check out kid in the back LMAO

kyle, hernie (keep an eye out for an upcoming interview i'm doing with him soon), and the bf

we started off in williamsburg and rode our way through greenpoint, long island city, and then parts of queens…

we passed by some green art park *update: its this park -> http://www.socratessculpturepark.org, thanks adalhi!* it was interesting, i’d like to go back and take more photos to share… if i can find my way back there lol

then we found our way to that damn bridge… well, we actually went over 1 bridge prior to that bridge… that’s when i handed my camera over to the bf.

we took a short breather because hernie got a flat, womp womp… then as he was trying to put air into the new tube, he accidentally snapped off the valve! he’s too strong for his own good…

crossed the bridge and landed on randall’s island. found our way out and over one more STEEP ASS BRIDGE, i’m talking STEEP. thighs were on FIYAH. but i made it up pretty quickly since it was a shorter bridge, i do better with short distance lol. we ended up somewhere in harlem so we decided to grab a few slices at the famous PATSY’s pizzeria! FUCK YEA. i was STARVING – it had already been about 6 hours since my muffin soy chai latte that morning!

we KILLED 5 boxes of pizza, i think i had one whole box to myself =X afterward, we headed back to the ride down the FDR. at that point, it was getting too dark for me to take photos without losing the group. so yea… not too much excitement here. but the ride was nice along the water…

once we got off the FDR at around 50th and 2nd ave, we were jetting downtown, but since the bf and i, along with hernie, were the ONLY ONES RIDING FIXED (FML) it was starting to get a bit tedious and tiresome on my poor legs.

i finally threw in the towel around 30th street because there were a few little hills that i could barely get over and decided…

IT WAS BELGIAN WAFFLE TIME!!!!

fuck all the bike riding shit, was so over it! lmaooooo – all i wanted to do now was stuff my face at petite abeille with belgian waffle a la mode and apple tart a la mode so that’s what we did g’damnit! peaced out to the crew and went straight for the sweets =)

DONE. inhaled that shit.

i would have licked the chocolate syrup too, but i didn’t want to embarass the bf…

oh yea. we took the train home =)

barceys in the neighborhood i grew up and live in once again for the moment. my mom and aunties still work at wyckoff (we’re filipino of course). i went to elementary school at st. a’s. the hipster world is closing in on this hood no? that cafe used to be a beauty salon run by my “tita” lydia. so weird! my fam (cousin, aunts, and uncles have lived in this area since the 70s), it’s so weird to see hipster joints pop up. and speaking of small world, i lived in the bay area when i went to grad school at state. your blog is great!

OMG YES! i was admitted in wyckoff last year after my bike accident lol. i live in the same building my cousin’s grew up in – and they’re still there. right around the corner. (i’m flip too if you didn know lmao). i remember the salon – it had like a little food area in the back. i wish there were more flip restaurants in the area tho =( i remember when i first moved there, there was one, but it closed down shortly hafter womp womp… so you’re still in bushwick/ridgewood??? SO MANY HIPSTERS NOW!

awww, if i knew you were admitted at wyckoff back then i could have hooked you up at wyckoff, lol. again, small world mabes if you are talking about the filipino restaurant that was on wyckoff across the street from the hospital near stanhope. my aunt and uncle owned that place. it was a laundromat first then they decided to try their hand at a restaurant. they are renting it out to the current owners. i think it was hard for them to find someone to continue on with it. in the end, they just wanted to stay retired and up keep was hard. they own a few buildings in the area but they are the only ones in my fam that reside deep in jersey and not nyc. the commute was brutal and they found themselves camping out in the apartment above the restaurant. plus, their kids, my cousins had their own thing going on and didn’t want to run the restaurant. so sad, it was fun having filipino food in the area. although, there is that grocery store in st. nicholas. although, i stick to shopping in woodside and elmhurst. i do live in the bushwick/ridgewood area. yay! you know ridgewood! i hate explaining where ridgewood is. i live off the part of cypress that is ridgewood. seeing the hipsters creep in over the years is so weird. when i was in high school it took me a while to adjust to all the hipsters on the L getting off at Bedford and now they are getting off here. do you know all those lofts on wyckoff, i used to walk by them on the way to the subway and they used to be sweatshops. nyc, always changing i guess. by the way i love what the forks too!! happy friday!
