…on tweeting vs. bloggin vs. TMI

Posted in Food for Thought by yoshi on June 1, 2010

someone asked me a great question on my formspring this morning:

i’d like to continue this conversation and give a bit of my thoughts on this tweeting, social networking business.

i’m sure many of you think that just because i spend a lot of my time blogging and tweeting a few things here and there, that i also have an array of social networking platforms that i absorb my daily life in.

that, i’m sorry, is just not true.

when people ask or tell me, “didn’t you see my tweet?” or “check my facebook status/pics/etc!” i usually reply with, “oh, i don’t check it that often…” which is sometimes hard for my friends to believe because i am, well, an “online personality.”

truth be told, i do spend a lot of time on the internet… but its usually when i’m at work or while i’m home waiting for my dinner to be cooked (or delivered). other than that, i LOVE to spend time with REAL friends in REAL life. while i don’t shun those for joining foursquare or any other applications intertwined with twitter, i REFUSE to have people know my whereabouts or what i’m doing 24/7!

i put down the blackberry when i’m out and about.

i ENJOY my person to person interactions and i find no need to tweet about what we just talked about or what we just did – unless, however, i WANT to share that i’m at a park with my friends enjoying the great NYC weather… now THAT’S something i CAN share with my online acquaintances… *or the fact that i mildly barfed in my mouth while trying to burp. –WHAT?! i’m SURE many other people can relate to that! sometimes i feel like people just share a little TOO much, especially if i see a tweet from you every 5-10 minutes. i mean really? is that REALLY necessary?? 5-10 minutes??

i guess its because i’ve been blogging and social networking for such a long time, that i really would appreciate a bit of privacy here and there. i find it somewhat rude when i’m with people and they whip out their phones to update their online status’ – HELLO!!!! i’m RIGHT HERE! TALK TO ME! *exception: if its something really grandiose that you MUST share with everyone, for instance, if i’m having a BLAST with @misslawn or @vernpie or @_SML_ or having the craziest online convo with @raaachem or @betsey…

now, i hope i’m not sounding like a snob…,,, or a caveman. but really, its just a personal choice of cutting the lines of online communication to live a “normal” life instead of a “cyber” life.

and no jimmy.

i will not join the yelp community. but i do thank them for giving me amazing dining options.

PREACH!! That’s one of the reasons why I don’t have a Twitter (besides the fact that I can’t come up with a name lol)… I don’t want to share what I’m doing with the world all the time. I like to be with real people and talk face-to-face…not really tweet-to-tweet.

i definitely enjoy more of real interaction with people. People still question me why i don’t have a smart phone and i just tell them, i don’t need to be online when i’m out with folks to have fun.

that is exactly how i feel when people are appalled at the fact that i don’t have a twitter. i love real stuff, not that fake twitter crap. i want to enjoy real company not the 140 or whatever letters someone is writing. also, i’m seriously not that fucking important to put myself on blast every time i do something. i have reached the conclusion that twitter is a place for people who either have no life but to tweet or those that just want to brag about all the “cool” things they are doing. period!
