…on being “influenced”
its funny being a blogger. you notice a lot of things from other blogs.
for instance the metamorphosis of people’s style – whether it be writing or fashion. you can literally go through their archives and watch these bloggers transform into something so different than what they started out as.
now, i understand that people want to “find themselves,” and if that means following suit of the latest fashion trends, so be it. but its uncanny how some of them go toward a certain “i’m going to look edgy, like a model” route.
whatever happened to their initial “style?”
was it because they all of a sudden wanted to dress like the models they saw on the catwalk, on jak & jill, the sartorialist, in magazines, or was it that their own blogs ultimately consumed their personal style because of the amount of hits/comments/shout-outs they started receiving?
nowadays, i find it hard to find “fashion” blogs that i like. i feel like every other “fashion” blog is a regurgitation of the last blog i just read.
i remember going to the japanese bookstores and magazine shops to find style inspirations because they were so creative, but the mags were also expensive. so of course i turned to the blogs. but now… i can’t even go through my google reader without needing to “mark all as read” because its just the same shit over and over again.
not only that, but i lost interest in many blogs i used to enjoy because so and so blogger(s) seem to have lost their way and got sucked into the “fashion hype.”
i’d be a hypocrite to say i was not one of them because hell, i KNOW i was. there was a time, i think when i first started doing more fashion related posts, that i too got consumed in the world of overpriced 6″ wedges, black this black that, partially shaved heads, and wanting to look like an off-duty model (despite my 5’1″ short-legged stature).
but i caught myself.
i looked at a few of my photos and literally smacked my head in disgust.
that’s not ME.
i love big hoop earrings, doc martens, colorful prints, sneakers, chola style.. i love my cheap h&m and forever21 items. my style has always worked for me, so why change it?
i got sucked into the fashion blog hype and i now i see it happening to all of the bloggers out there.
boo to that. soon enough, i think i won’t even bother reading any of them since they’ll all look the same and write the same (you know, like the bloggers who write as if they were trying to write to shakespeare).
here’s a tip for all you new bloggers: stay true. stay you. stay…. blue?! bahahhaha – yea, you get the point.
This is great Jess!
thanks carrie!!
Cheers to keeping it real. Nice job Yoshi!
=)
Amenz!
I’m too lazy to keep up with fashion blogs [or with, you know, fashion], but I can attest to this phenomenon occurring across the board, in various industries.
It’s an epidemic — the biting, the hegemonic culture [and yes, I use that word]. Everywhere you look — graphic design, photography, food writers, etc — people are morphing into The It Thing, albeit hella watered down versions. It gives me a big ol’ case of the sads sometimes.
I feel you.
write onnnn pimpinnnnn!
True story
OMYYGOSSHhh gurl preach!!!!!! these blogs are so whack nowadays..its like everybody has to be so extra and so flamboyant….all of a sudden everyone wears 20 bracelets, and 6rings, and big ass necklaces with 10 inch platforms talking about ohhhh these are sooo comfortable bisssshhhh please. They wear these god awful outfits and and even UGLIER shoes then boom their soo fashion forward—- if you ask me there is nothing cute about what some of these people wear….. as a matter of fact they’re wearing crap that everyone else is wearing(like you mentioned)….ummm no!!! I like to think that fashion forward is someone who has a unique personal style but looks effortless while doing so….kudos to you for keepin it 100—BTW love your style everything is thoughtful yet seamless, from the hairstyle to the hat cocked to the side, down to the shoes i can tell its you
sorry for the vent but this post has been something that has been on my mind for the several months
